about

Spartan Jet-Plex aka Nancy Grim Kells (they/them), the founder and facilitator of Grimalkin Records is releasing a series of 20-30 year old 4-track songs the first Friday of each month, July through October. Before the internet and social media, I made songs on a portable 4-track. I would occasionally make mix tapes and give them to my mom and a couple of friends. After going through some of my mom's things, I found several mix tapes I gave her from the early to late 90s. After feeling jaded by the art world and gallery scene in Los Angeles in the 90s, I turned away from my fine art background and started channeling my creative energies into music. It was freeing to create again just for me without a care of whether I knew what I was doing or if any of it was good. I weeded through about 10 different mix tapes and compiled the ones that stood out to me into 4 volumes that comprise Low-Lofi volumes 1-4. These songs were made using a perpetually out of tune toy bass, casios, and other toy instruments, as well as eventually a squire I saved up money to purchase in the late 90s. Recorded on a Tascam portable 4-track, these songs are the very beginning of what Spartan Jet-Plex evolved into over the years. The lesson and message I found in these old recordings is the necessity of maintaining and embracing the joy of creation and expression as a means towards self-development and evolution. There is something incredibly exciting and freeing I hear in these songs now knowing that I never meant for them to be heard by many and without a care for whether anyone would hear or like them. It is even more exciting to me that it mattered even less at the time that I made them whether I knew what I was doing or if the songs were any good.

Proceeds support Grimalkin's current fundraisers. We need about another $669 for our business plan fundraiser.
